“What would you do if you were the CEO of this company?”
That one question stayed with me for weeks while I was preparing for my first case competition. I kept wondering, what would I do if I had to solve a real business problem? That thought alone pulled me into the fascinating world of case competitions, a space where students transform into strategists, storytellers, and innovators all at once.
The first time I came across case competitions, I was curious but not sure. It seemed like a place for ambitious problem-solvers, a world where students stepped into the shoes of consultants, tackled real business challenges, and presented bold solutions. That moment I realised I wanted to pursue an MBA or anything that challenged my problem-solving skills, I decided to step into this world, and honestly, it’s one of the best experiences of my college life.
At college, opportunities are everywhere, and case competitions are one of the best ways to test yourself. Here’s what I experienced:

Chaos of Brainstorming: It starts with the excitement of receiving the problem statement. You and your team sit for hours together, discussing every line, debating ideas, and slowly shaping scattered thoughts into something meaningful.
Research & Strategy: Then comes the research part. Everyone in the team shares ideas based on what they know best, whether it’s marketing, finance, operations, or design, and somehow these different skills come together like the pieces of a puzzle. You study data, learn about industries, check competitors, and shape ideas that actually make sense in the real world.
The Creative Touch: This is always my favorite part. It is not just about solving the problem, but it's about presenting it with impact. I like to improve slides, organize thoughts, and make the story flow smoothly.
Team Dynamics: I learned a lot from working with different people. Each person has different strengths in research and design; mixing those skills together creates a better final idea. I learned that teamwork isn't about agreeing; it's about learning from each other.
The Presentation Rush: Standing before judges gives a mix of feelings of nervousness and excitement. Presenting our idea and defending it during intense cross-questioning is a pure adrenaline moment. Watching other teams present their unique ideas is equally inspiring; it makes you realize how one problem can have countless creative solutions and perspectives.
First Win & Beyond: When I won for the first time, it was surreal to see our hard work transform into results. It wasn’t just about the certificate but about the confidence that came from thinking, presenting, and performing under pressure.
The world of case competitions may seem intimidating at first, but every participant begins at their own level. For me, they became less about winning and more about discovering how far curiosity and determination could take me. Each competition teaches you something new, how to research better, present smarter, and think faster. With every round, I grew a little wiser, a little more confident, and a lot more aware of how the real world works.
Of course, there are those moments when you feel low, listening to presentations from other teams that sound so perfect and professional. But by the end, you realize that everyone has their own strengths. That’s the beauty of case competitions; there isn’t one way to be the best, because everyone shines differently.
And maybe, that’s how I finally found my answer to the question that started it all, “What would you do if you were the CEO of this company?”
I’d say I’d listen, innovate, and lead with curiosity, exactly what every case competition taught me to do.
